Abstract: This dataset is the Land Cover Map of Bhutan (2010). It represents the occurrence and distribution of different types of Land Use and Land Cover in Bhutan. The LULC classes listed here shows Forest cover of 70.46% (Excluding shrubs) with Broadleaf (62.43%), Mixed Coniferous (22.69%), Fir (6.77%), Blue Pine (2.96%), Chir Pine (3.98%) and 1.16% of Broadleaf with conifer. Likewise, Shrubs cover 10.81%, agriculture land and meadows cover 2.93% and 4.10% respectively. The snow cover constitutes 7.44%, bare areas with 3.20%. Marshy areas, non-built areas, built up areas, water bodies and degraded areas with less than 1% each. The average overall map accuracy at the national level is 97.91% with 95.67% minimum and 100.15% maximum at 95% Confidence Level.

Resource Lineage

Lineage statement: Materials Used: The land cover assessment was based on ALOS images (AVNIR-2) from the 2006-2009 winter season with 10 meter resolution. The LUPP (1995) land cover maps, topography maps (DSLR), Landsat (2004-05) and Google Earth were referred in the current land cover assessment (LCMP 2010). Image Processing Digital image processing was done with the ERDAS IMAGINE software. The images were first projected to DRUKREF-03 (Bhutan’s standard coordinate system, DSLR) to match the images with the existing topographic features such as contour and drainage lines. Image Classification The unsupervised classification was used to classify the images with the minimum of 30 classes with 10 iterations. Zonal Statistics function was used to summarize the values of a raster within the zones of another dataset. K means algorithm in R-Statistics was applied for grouping of homogenous segments. The initial assignment of land cover types was done by referring LUPP (1995) land cover maps and the Google Earth prior to field verification. The minimum mapping unit was set at 500m2. Field Verification & Map Accuracy Assessment Intensive field verification was done in almost all the gewogs for improving and validating the draft land cover maps. In order to ensure a reasonable level of precision, system accuracy assessments were carried out by comparing randomly selected referenced pixels. Random points were generated by the system with the minimum of 50 random points per class if the number of class is less than or equal to 12 and minimum of 75 to 100 random points per class if the total number of class is more than 12 at every geog level. The overall acceptance level of map accuracy was set at 85%.
