Abstract: Bhutan's mining sector primarily extracts industrial minerals like limestone, dolomite, gypsum, marble, ferro-silicon grade quartzite, iron ore, talc, and various construction materials. Due to favorable geological formations and easier market access, the majority of mines and quarries are concentrated in the southern foothills and lower Himalayas, with the central and northern high-altitude regions remaining largely inactive. The predominant extraction method is surface mining. Bhutan's mining policies are uniquely designed to balance economic prosperity with environmental preservation and social equity, aiming to promote in-country value addition and align the sector with the nation's development philosophy.
-
Purpose: The primary purpose of quarries is to extract natural resources—such as stone, sand, gravel, and minerals—from the Earth's surface for use in construction and industrial processes. These materials are essential for building roads, bridges, homes, and infrastructure.

Source description: The boundary pillars of all mining and quarry sites are established and surveyed using high-precision Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) equipment to ensure spatial accuracy. Based on the coordinates of these boundary markers, a polygon delineating the perimeter is generated. The centroid of this polygon is subsequently calculated using specialized geospatial mapping software, which defines the central reference point of the respective mine or quarry area. The data present here is the center location of all the mines and quarries site.
