Abstract: The waypoints dataset for trek routes in Bhutan offers crucial geographic reference points collected using handheld GPS devices, aiding trekkers in route planning, navigation, and exploration. These waypoints serve to enhance the outdoor experience by coordinates and facilitating the discovery of scenic attractions, cultural sites, and natural landmarks along the trekking routes.
Purpose: The Bhutan Treks Waypoints dataset provides essential geographic reference points to assist trekkers in route planning, navigation, and exploration of the diverse landscapes and cultural sites of Bhutan.

Resource constraints:
General Constraints:
Limitations of use: The accuracy of individual waypoints may vary due to GPS technology limitations and environmental factors, potentially impacting navigation precision. Reliance on GPS signals means usability may be affected in areas with signal disruptions, such as dense vegetation or urban canyons. Additionally, the dataset may not capture all hazards or changes along trekking routes, and periodic updates are necessary to maintain relevance.

Resource Lineage

Lineage statement: The waypoints dataset for trek routes in Bhutan was collected entirely using Handheld GPS devices. However, in densely forested areas, multipath errors may have affected data accuracy. These errors could potentially reduce the precision of collected geographic coordinates. Despite this limitation, the dataset remains a valuable resource for navigation and exploration along trekking routes in Bhutan.
Lineage scope:
Scope level: series
Process step:
Process description: Following collection, the raw data from Handheld GPS devices undergoes processing using GIS software like QGIS and ArcGIS. Topology validation is performed during this stage to maintain dataset integrity. In instances where minor data gaps arise, external sources such as topographic base maps or open base maps are consulted for supplementation. Additionally, reverification may be necessary in certain locations due to changes in routes or other environmental variables, ensuring ongoing accuracy and relevance of the waypoints dataset for trek routes in Bhutan. Some of the waypoints along the popular trek routes were being validated on desktop by Department of Tourism in March-April 2024
